Soap Opera "As The Mouse Moves" - Thursday August 12th 2004
Starlene walked quickly to the ringing telephone on the coffee table of her sister's Bleecker Street apartment.
"Hello," she answered.
"I'd like to speak to Starlene," the man said.
"This is she," Starlene said in her thick southern accent.
"Starlene this is Mr. Jordan with Playbody Magazine."
"Mr. Joe Adams told me that he'd been in touch with you about modeling for one of our upcoming issues."
"Yes, yes he did," she said remembering how Stanley had sent Joe down to City Hall to tell her that Playbody wanted to use her picture in another issue. Stanley hoped this would keep Starlene from marrying Vinny.
"I'm really sorry, but that isn't going to be possible at this time."
"What? What are you talking about?" she asked as anger filled her voice.
"Joe no longer works here," he said.
"So what difference does that make?"
"Joe was released from his duties."
"Well I hardly even knew Joe. I can't say that matters, but I was counting on the job. I've modeled for Playbody in the past and I'm sure this must be a big mistake. I have a lot of experience," she said with confidence.
"I'm very sorry Starlene. The editor wants to use only new models."
"But I was told I'd have a job modeling," she whined.
"I'm terribly sorry. The decision is final," he said hanging up the phone.
"Well, I'll be!" Starlene said slamming the phone down on the coffee table.
"What's wrong?" Tiffany asked walking into the living room.
"I'm not going to be modeling for Playbody after all. Just like that they called and canceled my job."
"I'm sorry honey. I wonder why?"
"Remember I told you Stanley sent this guy named Joe to City Hall to tell me that I would be hired to model?"
"Yeah, I remember you telling me about Joe."
"Well, he no longer works there. Just like that."
"Well, I'll be," Tiffany said.
"Yeah, I'm so furious. I'm calling Stanley," she said reaching for the phone and hitting speed dial.
"Hello," Stanley answered.
"Gee thanks for nothing," Starlene said in a disgusted voice.
"Thanks for promising me a job with Playbody so I wouldn't marry Vinny," she said.
"There's nothing I can do about it," Stanley said.
"So you know that your friend Joe was fired?"
"Yes, the editor called me and said he'd received threats."
"Threats? What are you talking about?"
"That's all he'd tell me. He said he let Joe go after ten years of service and he wasn't going to use you in the magazine," Stanley said as his voice started to weaken.
"Stanley what's the matter?"
"I just don't like this Starlene. I think it's because of that guy Vinny. He doesn't want you modeling for Playbody. Does he?"
"No he doesn't want me to model, but he wouldn't do... " She stopped when she realized that when she talked to Vinny on the phone yesterday he had threatened to do away with Stanley too.
