"Ilona how are you Baby?" Skeeter asked Jan's plump housekeeper as she opened the door to Jan's Upper East Side mansion.
"Mr. Skeeter. I be surprised to know you come tonight," she said in her broken English.
"Yeah, looks like I might close the deal with Jan soon," he said in his slow southern accent referring to his request for a divorce.
"Miss Jan she tells me you get her book," she said referring to the Park Avenue Women's Society membership directory that Ilona had given to Skeeter.
"Yeah, thanks Baby," he said as she closed the door and he walked into the living room.
"You no tell her I give you book, no?" she said nervously.
"No, of course not Ilona. You and me are buds Baby," he said eyeing her heavy bosom and watching her face redden, just as he had anticipated.
"Oh if she know I give you book for this she fire me, for sure," she said as he walked towards the sofa and took a seat.
"I'll never tell her Baby. Don't worry. I told her I found it over there on the desk in the hallway."
"Miss Jan she very angry for this," Ilona said in a hushed voice as they heard the front door open.
"Ilona is Skeeter here?" Jan called out.
"Yes Miss Morgan. Mr. Skeeter here now," she said walking towards the front door.
"Then prepare drinks for us," Jan snapped as she put her briefcase beside the table in the lobby, closed the door and walked into the living room. "I see you're here," she said spotting her husband relaxing on the sofa.
"Yeap. Just waiting for you," he said.
"Well, I think I have everything ready," she said taking a seat on the sofa beside him.
"Good," he said.
"Did you bring my membership directory with you?" she asked referring to the names of the ladies in her club.
"Yeap," he said.
"May I have it now?"
"Nope. Not until I see the signed papers Jan," he said lighting a cigarette and blowing a smoke circle.
"Okay," she said getting up from the sofa and walking towards the table in the hallway. She took out a large envelope and walked back to the sofa. "Here," she said handing him the envelope.
Skeeter opened the envelope and Ilona walked into the living room with a tray of drinks. She placed the tray on the coffee table and glanced up to see Skeeter's eyes on her bosom as she bent over. He winked quickly. She forced herself not to smile.
"That will be all Ilona," Jan snapped as the plump housekeeper turned and walked back into the kitchen.
Jan watched as Skeeter's eyes quickly read the legal papers and he turned the pages.
"Here," he said out loud as he got to the part he was looking for. "This is looking pretty good to me Baby. You got the check made out?" he asked as he continued to read the papers.
