Soap Opera "As The Mouse Moves" - Friday December 12th 2003
Ilona rushed towards the front door of the Upper East Side mansion when she heard the doorbell.  She knew Amanda coming for dinner tonight was important. The plump housekeeper had heard Skeeter and Jan arguing upstairs.  She overheard that Skeeter had fired his salesgirl Amanda because he thought she was gay.  Jan had been out of town on a multi million-dollar deal and missed the opening of his new lingerie store.  Jan was furious because she had hired Amanda and arranged for the TV crews to cover the grand opening. When Jan came home for dinner she was greeted with the news of Amanda's firing and the tabloid headlines "New Village Lingerie Store Proves to be Casting Couch for Girly Magazine."
Ilona quickly opened the front door and smiled at the large framed woman standing in the doorway.
"Good evening, you come for dinner?" Ilona asked in her broken English.
"Hi, yeah.  My name's Amanda," she said smiling as she quickly turned to get one last glimpse of the limo Jan had sent for her as it made it's way back into the traffic.
"Good evening," Jan said walking down the stairway towards the living room.
"Hi Jan," Amanda said handing Ilona her black leather motorcycle  jacket to hang in the coat closet near the front door.
"Come on in, it's great to see you," Jan said as the two women walked into the living room of her Upper East Side mansion.
"Where's Skeeter?" Amanda asked as she took a seat on the sofa.
"He's a little busy right now.  Perhaps he can join us for dinner later," Jan said having felt it would be better if Skeeter stayed out of the negotiations of Amanda's employment.
"I don't really want to be around him anyway," Amanda said leaning back on the sofa.
"Look Amanda, I'm sorry that your job at my husband's lingerie store got off to a bad start," Jan said taking a seat on the sofa next to the young woman. She glanced up and saw her plump housekeeper watching them.
"Ilona, attend to the dinner and leave Amanda and me here to talk privately," Jan said as the housekeeper quickly walked out of the living room towards the dining room.  Ilona stopped on the other side of the dining room door where she could listen to their conversation and occasionally peep into the living room without them seeing her.
"I see that you've seen the turn out we had at the store today," Amanda said.  She picked up the newspaper from the coffee table and glanced at the headline "New Village Lingerie Store Proves to be Casting Couch for Girly Magazine."
"Yes." Jan said.
"Skeeter's jealous because the women liked me."
"On the phone earlier today you said that you think Skeeter fired you because you're gay," Jan repeated the young woman's words from their prior conversation.
"Yeah, I do think that's it."
"I talked to him and he doesn't think that's a problem," Jan lied.
"Really?"
"Yes.  He wants you to come back to work tomorrow," Jan lied again.
"Not if I can't go into the dressing room with the women and help them like I'm supposed to."
"You can."
"Who says?"
"Me."
"But Skeeter fired me."
"I hired you."
"I've already called my lawyer. He said we could win this case."
"I'm prepared to make you an offer," Jan said.
"Well, I don't know," Amanda said glancing around the expensive mansion and wondering how much Jan was worth.
"I need you working in that store Amanda.  I need someone watching over my husband. I know he's a flirt.  I have my business to take care of and I can't have him alone with women all day long."
"I just don't know," Amanda said leaning back on the sofa.
Jan leaned close to Amanda and in a hushed voice said "this arrangement will be between the two of us and no one else will have to ever know about it."
"I'm listening," Amanda said putting her arm up onto the back of the sofa as her hand touched Jan's shoulder.
Ilona's chubby hand flew up to her mouth as she watched the two women cheek to cheek in the living room.
