"Miss Morgan is expecting you," the waiter said handing Skeeter's coat to the coat check girl.
Skeeter glanced at the short skirt the young coat check girl was wearing and smiled broadly when he noticed her grinning at him.
"This way sir," the waiter said as Skeeter followed him to the back of the restaurant in Little Italy.
"Would you like a drink sir," the waiter asked pulling out the chair for Skeeter as he took a seat beside Jan at the table.
"Bourbon and water," Skeeter said smiling at Jan.
"You're late Skeeter," Jan said taking another piece of bread from the plate in front of her.
"Is that all you got to say to me?" Skeeter asked watching the waiter rush towards the bar for his drink.
"Well, this is an important lunch date Skeeter. I hoped you would be excited," she said buttering a piece of bread and handing it to him.
"I am. I just got tied up in traffic," he lied thinking about the last hour that he'd spent in his bedroom with Trisha.
"You only live a few blocks from here Skeeter."
"There was traffic. I'm sorry," he said taking the bread from her as the waiter put his drink on the table.
"Did Tiffany get the papers my attorneys drew up?" she asked referring to his estranged wife and the divorce papers she had her attorneys prepare.
"Yeah, she got them."
"She signed them I trust."
"As far as I know. She wasn't that happy about it though."
"Oh, she wanted to stay married while she has her affair with Amir."
"I don't know. Maybe she's still in love with me or something."
"Are you in love with her?"
"I'll always care about her, but I'm not in love with her."
"Are you in love with me?"
"What is this? A questionnaire or lunch?" he asked taking a sip of his Bourbon.
"Okay, it's doesn't matter. Have you thought about my offer?"
"Yeah, I've been giving it some thought; but this is so sudden."
"You mean it wasn't enough time after four years in a relationship with me?"
"Jan this whole thing kinda came up out of the blue. I'm not so sure it's not over you being angry 'cause your old man is marrying a younger woman," he said referring to her Father and Tiffany's young sister Starlene.
"I don't care if he does or not," she lied.
"So it's the money thing then?" he asked referring to the fact that she had snooped through her Father's papers and was convinced she could inherit all of his money if she was married.
"What is this, a questionnaire or an agreement to my proposal?" she said smiling as she reached for her purse.
"I don't know," he said taking another sip of his Bourbon.
"Well, I've got the engagement ring," she said taking a box from her purse and opening it.
"You bought your own engagement ring?"
"Skeeter you couldn't afford the ring I wanted."
"Well, I said I could get some money together," he said his pride hurt.
"But I wanted this ring, so why not?" she said opening the velvet box and turning it for him to see the huge diamond ring.
"That looks like the Hope Diamond," he said stunned by the size of the large stone.
"You like it?"
"It's beautiful. You mean you're going to tell people I gave you that ring," he said glancing around to see if anyone was watching them.
"Yes, if you say we're going to get married."
"Then it's my ring and I'm giving it to you?"
"That's right," she said taking it out of the box.
"Shouldn't I put it on your finger then," he asked smiling broadly.
