Need some inspiration, a good laugh or an education in Tibetan travel, the Upper West Side has it all!
The photo to the right is the Nicholas Roerich Musuem. Nicholas Roerich was a Russian born philosopher, artist, architect, explorer, scenery painter and pacifist. His wife bought this beautiful mansion on 107th and Riverside Drive to house his possessions. The paintings are mostly of his Tibetan travels and display his interest in mysticism.
The picture center right is The Cathedral of St. John the Divine. This Gothic style cathedral is the largest in the world and it's still being built even though building started in 1892. You'll see many old tapestries and icons. One tapestry that shouldn't be missed is of scenes from the New Testament (17C) after a design by Raphael.
Okay, enough culture, inspiration and learning, walk over to Broadway and 112th Street and check out Tom's Restaurant. Does this look familiar? The folks at Toms' are used to people staring at them. This restaurant was the inspiration for Jerry Seinfeld's TV series. Pictures of Jerry, Elaine, George and Kramer are displayed and autographed. To the folks working there...no big deal, they've seen Jerry many times and got plenty of pictures to prove it. Great 'big salads', by the way.
